Hydraulic Rotary Union (Hydraulic Piping between Slewing and Non-Slewing Structure)

In any Bulk Material Handling Plant, when the raw material enters and leaves the Stock Yard from the same Junction Tower, ARTICULATED TYPE TRIPPER is provided in the Yard Machine.

(Articulated type tripper arrangement is one of the 2 types of tripper arrangement used in any Bucket Wheel Stacker Reclaimer machine which is suitable for this layout requirement. The other type of Tripper arrangement suitable for this layout is SCISSORS TYPE TRIPPER. I will be writing an article on Types of Trippers & By-Pass arrangements separately)

In addition to Luffing Cylinders, Articulated Tripper needs one more set of Hydraulic Cylinders for its articulating operation.

In a Bucket Wheel Stacker Reclaimer Machine, the luffing cylinders are mounted on the Slewing Structure (Slew Platform) whereas the cylinders for articulated tripper is mounted on the Non-Slewing Structure (Tripper). Hydraulic Piping to be done for both sets of cylinders.

For the operation of these two sets of Hydraulic Cylinders which are mounted at two different structures, providing 2 Hydraulic Power packs seems the only (costly!) solution. But by using a HYDRAULIC ROTARY UNION, hydraulic piping shall be done between the Slewing and Non-Slewing Structure with a Single Hydraulic Power pack.

Hydraulic rotary union is the coupler which connects the pipes at slewing structure with the pipes at non slewing structure.

Below pictures show the cross section of a Hydraulic Rotary Union.

This Hydraulic Rotary Union is commonly used in Earth Movers. In Earth Movers, piping from the hydraulic power pack which is mounted on the Slew Platform is taken to the Crawler Hydraulic Motors which is mounted on the Non-Slewing Structure through a Hydraulic Rotary Union.
